Generations from now, we’ll look back and say, “How could we have done this kind of thing to people?”
Schooling is world is a 2010 documentary film by Carol Black about the impact of modern education on non-western cultures. It shows a disturbing picture of what good intentions can bring about. Traditional ways of life, traditional values are bulldozed over by modern Western ones. The implicit assumption is that these other ways of being are backward and that they should be replaced by the modern, Western, industrialised ways.
Black’s documentary is sad, as it shows the dissolution of beautiful human culture. It does not offer any ready solutions, but the least we can do, is acknowledge and witness what is happening.
