Will Russia be the saviour of civilisation? Thierry Baudet has suggested this before in his own speeches. This week, Robert Lemm, a Dutch historian, returns to the theme in an essay about the philosopher Vladimir Solovyov. In a fantasy novel, which recalls R. W. Benson’s Lord of the World, Solovyov imagined an apocalyptic future in which the world unites under one globalist emperor preaching human rights. What little remains of Christian civilisation has survived in Russia. Most of the world worships the new leader but, in a triumphant dénouement, the last true pope, previously exiled in Russia, unites with the Jews in Jerusalem who rebel against the globalist impostor and convert to Christianity. Christ returns and a millennium of peace finally dawns. Some of the elements of this story may remind us of the present. Only the future will tell whether the rest will come true too.
