Tuberculosis is causing around 1.5 million deaths per year, and has a cumulative death toll of around 1 billion human beings in the 19th and 20th century. The prevalence of the drug-resistant strain is increasing with frightening speed, and this has been known for decades. Most victims are in resource-poor countries, but its occurrence is world-wide. Some promises have been made by world leaders, but far, far to few resources have been allocated.
Tuberculosis is the bane of humanity, and the 24th of March is World Tuberculosis Day. It is hard to imagine that the leaders of the world will do anything different from other years to combat this global pandemic. We can still hope, of course, we can pray. But unfortunately, Tuberculosis is not going away.
